SOME MISCELLANEOUS THOUGHTS ON EDUCATION

By J. Parnell McCarter

Education which is either based in secular humanism or Romanism or dispensationalism or a host of other falsehoods, is a violation of the ninth commandment.  Such education promotes lies.  Those who are perpetrating such lies as secular humanism, Romanism, etc.,  are guilty of violating the ninth commandment.  Those who are satisfied with such education, and not grieved by it, are guilty of violating the ninth commandment.

Church officers have a duty to strive for the church establishing and superintending schools and colleges which teach in accordance with the Biblical doctrines summarized in the Westminster Confession of Faith.  Reasonable means should be applied to effect this, when and if it can be effected by reasonable means.

All parents have a duty to strive for providing their children with an education in accordance with the Biblical doctrines summarized in the Westminster Confession of Faith.  Reasonable means should be applied to effect this, if and when it can be effected by reasonable means.

No church officer should rest easy while members in his church are having their children educated in heretical errors, whether those errors be secular humanistic, Romish, dispensationalist, Arminian, etc.

No parent should rest easy while his children are being educated in heretical errors, whether those errors be secular humanistic, Romish, dispensationalist, Arminian, etc.

Are there circumstances in which because of lack of resources, economic limitations, other pressing responsibilities,  etc., churches cannot reasonably be expected to establish and superintend schools and colleges which teach in accordance with the Biblical doctrines summarized in the Westminster Confession of Faith?  Yes.  But it should be kept in mind that with new technologies such as videotape, the internet, etc., there are many more available means than were available in the past, and these new means should be considered.

Are there circumstances in which because of lack of resources, available schools and colleges, economic limitations, other even more pressing responsibilities, etc., parents may send their children to schools and colleges based in secular humanism or some other grievous errors?  Yes.   But it should be kept in mind that with new technologies such as videotape, the internet, etc., as well as more widely available school curricula, there are many more available means than were present in the past, and these new means should be considered.

Those who display an obvious indifference to education that is consistent with the Biblical doctrines summarized in the Westminster Confession of Faith, are neither worthy of holding church office nor of communicant membership.
