Jonathan Edwards was a famous post-millennial historicist. He believed the
kingdoms of Antichrist (Popery) and Mohammed were the two greatest instruments
of the devil to blind the nations. King Jesus, thru his masterly government of
the world, brought about the blessed Reformation and so delivered his church
from the wilderness and rescued her from the antichristian persecution.
Edwards, like many
historicists, believed the final consumption of Popery would be in 1866. The
1260 years the pagans would tread on the temple beginning when Emperor Phocas
established the Papacy in 606. He believed
(according to Mardsen) the millennium would begin around the year 2000 A.D.;
six thousand years pre-dating its initiation he believed the literal thousand
years would be a Sabbath millennium where Christ
would have universal dominion: destroying all previous world empires, filling
the earth with knowledge of him, and giving his poor persecuted saints
judgment.
